Four stars: A fine bluegrass collection

The music on this delightful disc consists of traditional hymns and folksongs, collected and arranged by Tim Sharp and Wes Ramsay.

The High, Lonesome (Bluegrass) Mass is the major work here, at approximately 22 minutes. A number of folk hymns have been assembled for this mass, and anyone who has a fondness for bluegrass music will find the piece delightful. This is particularly true because of the excellence of the vocal octet Kentucky Harmony. Their intonation is impeccable, their diction crisp, and they sing with extraordinary spirit. The Chuck Nation Band of bluegrass instruments is equally skilled, so the result is an infectious spirit that is likely to have you tapping your toes and humming along. Some of the traditional hymns being used are “Do Lord, Do Remember Me,” “What Wondrous Love Is This,” and “Hail the Blest Morn.”

River Medley is a five-minute group of three familiar songs: “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand,” “Down to the River to Pray,” and “Shall We Gather at the River?” Again, the performances are superb.

There is not much more to say. If bluegrass music appeals to you, go for it. The triple fold-out case in which the disc is housed includes a very well-written and informative essay about the music. The recorded sound is clean and well balanced. An enjoyable, fun disc that I wish were longer.
